Should English Be The International Language?

Following the previous post on the topic of films, the Q&A column sheds the light on all the matters closely-related to Culture and Customs.

PART 1

1. What language do you speak at home? Since we were born and brought up in Vietnam, both me and my family's mother tongue is Vietnamese. Fortunately, parents are wise and they know what's best for their children. They made a decision to let us study English, as well as allow us to get in touch with the other cultures at an early age through the assistance of the Internet, travelling, toys, books, and so forth. I'd never have become the person I am today without the support of parents.

2. Do you speak any other languages?

I took a course on Korean back in the days. However, the study went no where and turned out to be a massive waste of time and money. Even though the failure was part of me to blame due to my laziness and zero perseverance, I soon came to realize that it'd be more beneficial if I solely focus on developing my command of English.

3. What is the best way to learn a foreign language?

The heavy concentration on grammar in most schools then arbitrarily hindered students from their interest in learning. Today, on the other hand, task-based approaches have become widespread, emphasizing communication and the practical uses of language. Thanks to this innovation, the majority of millennials can use English very fluently as a second language. In short, the best way to learn is through interacting and engaging.

4. What is your opinion about English as an international language?

From my point of view, English serves as a brilliant international language. First and foremost, the language is flexible and simple to learn. Secondly, it open doors to world best academic institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford and Melbourne which are all taught in English. Lastly, regarding business, it helps developing countries like Vietnam come into contact with great nations for better international trade and better investors.
